Episode: Los Angeles (Legend by Marie Lu)

WANTED BY THE REPUBLIC

File no: 462178 – 3233 “DAY”

------------------------------------

WANTED FOR ASSAULT, ARSON, THEFT,

DESTRUCTION OF MILITARY PROPERTY,

AND HINDERING THE WAR EFFORT

200,000 REPUBLIC NOTES FOR

INFORMATION LEADING TO ARREST

That’s what the Jumbotron shows during the criminal report. Plus a picture that changes from time to time. They totally have no idea who Day is.  Aside from being a 15-year old most wanted criminal, I also didn’t have any idea how Day looked like. Well, I think he’s very good looking since he can manage to make a girl blush just by glancing at them.

STOP!!!

I have to stop! This book is driving me crazy.  I can’t talk about my journey or do a retelling of this without making me crazy. So I’ll just babble. I hope it makes sense.

I had to put this book down several times. I wasn’t living inside the world of Day and June so it wasn’t hard. But each time I took a break from reading, I’ve been continuously thinking about what I read. Like, how could Day not pass the Trial? He’s given the Republic so much trouble and they could not figure out who he is but he still failed?  There’s got to be some mistake! I was also questioning how Day could have killed Metias? He said he just hit him in the shoulder. If Day is really as good as they say, he could not have thought that he just hit Metias’ shoulder then ending up hitting him in the chest. It’s a frame up! And each time I pick the book back up, the answer’s there. Yes, Day passed the trial and he got a perfect score.  And yes, it is a frame up. He did not kill Metias.

Legend is predictable, deliberately predictable.  I see the story as well planned that it shows us how the character thinks very clearly and makes it deliberately predictable. Predictability is usually bad in a story but in this case, it makes it fun to read. It made me think I’m inside their minds or something like that.

The only problem I think I had with this is that at the beginning I had problems with the Day and June POV style.  They seem so alike that at first I got confused whenever I see “I”.   I can’t really say that it’s a problem, but Metias, John and Day’s mom’s death didn’t produce much impact on me.  after learning that Metias died, I was like “What?”, on Day’s mom’s death I just got wide eyed, and on john’s death being shown on the Jumbotron “O my God” but it was just that, I was able to move on very quickly. Maybe coz the experience with them was short.

There are several questions that I’m still thinking about after reading the book. Like, if the plague is manufactured, why would they test it on their own people? What’s the point in preparing for a bio-warfare with the Colony if their people are already dead! (hangover from Speaker of the Dead) I assume and it was probably implied that they don’t care about the poor people. I really hate politics whether it’s for real or in fiction!!!! So is it just a coincidence that it’s Day’s brother who’s first to get infected by the mutated plague strain? Another question is how does a Mongolian-Caucasian look like? I’m just curious coz I don’t know anyone who’s Mongolian-Caucasian so I don’t really know how the mix would turn out. Probably hot! hehe And other questions like, why do I keep thinking that Tess isn’t human? Is she Fey in disguise? Why do I dislike June so much? Is she a robot? And Kaede is a vampire… Hahaha

Legend is a fun read.  I didn’t hold my breath while reading but I still like it.  It make’s me curious. It makes me wanna predict what would happen next and it’s so fun when I’m right.

See you in Prodigy!
