Episode: Nevernever (Iron King by Julie Kagawa)

Now I know how Alice felt when she first stepped into wonderland. It’s magical but kinda creepy coz I’m not really the outdoorsy type and I’ve watched too much horror movies.  Good thing Meghan had Puck, well, till someone started running after them. You know how fairy tales are now getting a creepy version, it got somewhat like that.  I was expecting for a tree root to trip me and strangle me once I hit the ground. Didn’t happen, thank God! We met a talking cat instead I kept wondering if it can do tricks like making his body disappear leaving his head floating.  That would have been totally creepy so it’s a good thing I didn’t find out.  When he disappears, he totally disappears. And if there is one thing I learned from that cat, Grimalkin, it’s that nothing is free in the land of fey. Everything is a trade.

It’s like a combination of Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet and everything fey.  I’m not saying that it’s a copy of anything, there were just some moments that reminded me of those stories.  The world of Nevernever is wonderful and exciting. The mythology is so colorful, I ate everything up.  The Unseelie court (winter cold) doesn’t only apply to the land but also on the people.  They’re so icy, I could have shivered if it wasn’t so hot here.  The Seelie (Summer Court) is warm but unlike the Winter court, its lands temperature isn’t directly proportional to the temperament of the people, at least that’s how I saw it. But Winter court and Summer court hating each other felt real (maybe it really is, we just don’t know for sure). It was like they’ll all just jump out of my book and start killing each other.  This is why the alliance (love triangle) formed between half-fairy Meghan, Summer Courts Puck and the winter prince, Ash to take down the iron king was very entertaining. I would have loved the story even if the Iron Court didn’t appear.  Puck and Ash always trying to kill each other, the growing love triangle, the action as well as the slight drama made me turn page after page.

If I’d give this book a rating it would be 5/5.

I just remembered, there was an iron knight who looked like Ash. Why does he look like Ash?
